Why Study Abroad?
There are many reasons why you should study abroad at some point during your education. While overseas, you continue normal academic progress toward your degree, retain your eligibility for financial aid, and remain eligible for on -campus housing upon your return. The following list is not inclusive, but it illustrates the benefits of studying abroad:

Benefits of Studying Abroad
You will learn about yourself and develop cross-cultural skills. Many students, after returning to Indianapolis, mention that their time overseas led them to learn more about themselves as individuals and about their role in a global society. Spending time in another country allows you to develop cross-cultural skills that will assist you in intercultural relationships you will develop in the future.

Credits
You can earn credit toward your University degree. The fact that you are not on the University of Indianapolis campus doesn't necessarily mean that the work toward your degree stops. Academic credit that you work on overseas may be transferred back to the University and applied toward major requirements and the 124-credit-hour graduation requirement for a bachelor's degree. More information about transferability will be explained once you have been accepted into a study abroad program.

Costs
Study-abroad programs tend to be less expensive than study in the United States. This is especially true if you choose a program sponsored by the College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS), of which the University of Indianapolis is a member. CCIS programs range in cost anywhere from $1,025 to $16,750, with the average program cost running between $7,500 and $8,500 — cheaper than a semester of tuition at the University.

Language Immersion
Immersion in international cultures promotes language proficiency. The best way to learn a language is to be immersed in its culture. Many of the programs offered by the University of Indianapolis allow language majors and minors to spend some amount of time with a host family, experiencing their language and culture firsthand. Francophones have their choice of Quebec or France. German students can explore the language and customs of Germany or Austria. Those studying Spanish can improve their language abilities in a myriad of countries including Spain, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina and Costa Rica.

Your Future
Experience overseas can add to your career development. Many employers, especially those with interests in other nations, are drawn to candidates who have spent time in another country. Who knows? You might be hired by an international firm to work in their Seville, Spain offices because you spent a semester there as a University of Indianapolis study-abroad student.
