Travel to Canada for International Students in the USA
To Enter Canada
To enter Canada for a visit of 30 days or less, students and scholars
must show the following documents, which must be valid beyond the date
you expect to leave Canada:
- Valid SEVIS I-20
Make sure your SEVIS I-20 has not expired and then get a signature
on page 3 for re-entry to the United States (must be signed by a Designated
School Official).
- Valid passport
This must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you
expect to return.
- Valid I-94 card
If you will be in Canada for 30 days
or less, keep your I-94 card throughout the trip. If possible,
the card should not be turned in at the border.
- Valid
Canadian Tourist Visa
This may take some time to obtain, so plan ahead!
To Re-enter the United States
- Valid SEVIS I-20 endorsed with travel signature
To
re-enter the U.S. after your visit to Canada, you should already have
a valid SEVIS I-20 signed on page 3 by a Designated School Official.
- Valid Passport
This passport should be valid for
at least 6 months beyond the date you re-enter.
- Valid I-94 Card
- *Valid U.S. visa with at
least one entry remaining
If you do not have a valid entry visa for the United States, you cannot
obtain one in the United States. You must schedule an appointment
to visit the U.S. Embassy or Consulate while you are in Canada. Instructions
on how to obtain an appointment are included in this packet.
*Exception: Canadian citizens do not need a visa to
re-enter the United States.
